Snapping Scapula Syndrome
Snapping scapula syndrome is a rare condition that occurs when the undersurface of the shoulder blade rubs against the underlying ribs, causing audible popping and pain. Active individuals can be bothered by backpack use or overhead activity. Nonoperative treatment can sometime be effective, with unresponsive cases often requiring surgical decompression. Dr. Owens performs arthroscopic resection of the scapula through small incisions, allowing for faster return to work and activity.

OPEN SCAPULA RESECTION CAN BE PERFORMED IN THE BEACH CHAIR POSITION
Snapping scapula syndrome is more commonly seen in military patients. Open resection can be performed in the beach chair position with concomitant shoulder athroscopy.
SNAPPING SCAPULA SYNDROME IS RARE CONDITION BUT CAN BE TREATED WITH ARTHROSCOPIC RESECTION
While this condition is rare, it is seen more commonly in the military population due to the unique load bearing activities of the shoulder girdle. While activity modification can be helpful in some, active patients can benefit from arthroscopic bursectomy and superomedial scapular resection. (Thomas DM, Hansen UD, Owens BD. Hook Retraction For Scapulothoracic Arthroscopy. Am J Orthop 2011;40:372-3.)
