Pectoralis Major Tendon Tear
The pectoralis major muscle is one of the most powerful muscles in the body and injuries to the tendon occur in young and middle-aged athletes. The most common cause is weight lifting – specifically the bench press – but it can occur with other sporting events as well. While some partial thickness tears or muscular injuries can be treated without surgery, most tendon tears require early surgical repair for optimal outcome. Delayed repairs may require graft augmentation for tendon reconstruction.
RELATED STUDIES
ANATOMIC STUDY OF PECTORALIS MAJOR TENDON TO FACILITATE SURGICAL REPAIR
Anatomic study of cadaver specimens was first to define the insertional anatomy of the pectoralis major tendon. Knowledge of the exact location of this long and thin tendon insertion is critical for delayed repairs or reconstructions.
TEENAGE ATHLETE SUSTAINS BONY AVULSION OF PECTORALIS TENDON
Case report suggesting that younger athletes may experience failure of the pectoralis major muscle unit without tendon tear. This has implications for surgical repair technique as well as study of pectoralis tendinopathy.
ALLOGRAFT RECONSTRUCTION MAY BE REQUIRED FOR CHRONIC PECTORALIS TEARS
Small case series of pectoralis major reconstructions performed on patients with chronic tears. Surgical treatment had been delayed in these patients for an average of 22 months from injury.
