Brett Owens, MD is a fellowship-trained, board certified orthopedic sports medicine surgeon, specializing in arthroscopic repair of sports-related injuries as well as complex knee and shoulder reconstructions. Prior to joining University Orthopedics, Lieutenant Colonel Owens served as the Chief of Orthopedics and Sports Medicine at Keller Army Hospital at West Point, NY, where he cared for soldiers and cadets at the United States Military Academy and was Team Physician for the Army lacrosse, rugby, and football teams. While deployed in Iraq during Operation Iraqi Freedom, Dr. Owens served as Chief of Orthopedics at the 86th Combat Support Hospital.
Dr. Owens is currently Team Physician for the US Lacrosse National Men’s Team, and Team Physician for Brown University. He is a Professor at Uniformed Services University and Professor at Brown University, Alpert School of Medicine.
Dr. Owens was named by fellow orthopedists in Orthopedics This Week as one of the “Top 28 North American Knee Surgeons” in 2014. He has published over 150 articles in peer-reviewed medical journals, given over 200 national or international presentations, co-edited two textbooks on orthopedic injuries, and serves as Associate Editor for the American Journal of Sports Medicine. His research has garnered 5 major awards from the American Orthopedic Society for Sports Medicine.
Dr. Owens is a member of multiple orthopaedic and sports medicine societies. He serves as the Communications Council Chair on the Board of Directors of the American Orthopaedic Society for Sports Medicine. He currently serves on the Annual Meeting Committee of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgery. He is on the Learning Center Committee for the Arthroscopy Association of North America. He serves on the North American Traveling Fellowship Committee for the American Orthopaedic Association. He is also a member of the Herodicus Society and the American Shoulder and Elbow Surgeons.
